Berri - Blender render test by BenHickling Berri - Blender render test by BenHickling
Finally got around to rigging that Berri model I made a while back. Just playing around with the new Cycles renderer in Blender. It makes preeeetty lighting, although it's slow as hell on my 4-year old computer. I actually used a cheap render farm website to get this rendered. Took 40 minutes, can't imagine how long it would have taken on my own system. :I

Well done with the rigging. Are you doing facial morphs as well?

This model wasn't set up for facial posing unfortunately

Perhaps in due time. Berri can't be smiling all the time if you want her to look serious.

At first I thought this was one of your paintings hahah - really nice! I always have a strong urge to try modelling when I see others' results, but so far my attempts have been rather unfruitful...maybe I should try Blender again. Sometimes the usual repertoire of alien/monster sculpts can be a bit boring, its nice to see something a little more cartoon-y and stylized like this!

Yeah, it's a shame there's so many monsters and alien creations compared to more simplistic stylised stuff. I guess it's not as 'cool' or something, or maybe it's just easier to throw a load of textured lumpy detail on a creature than it is to streamline and simplify something.

This is actually the first model I've made where something decent came out. There's more tutorials around on places like youtube now, so that definitely helps. Blender can seem really weird at first, but if you follow the basic tutorials on blendercookie, you should be up and running in no time!

Yeah, I mean don't get me wrong there are some great sculpts out there of aliens & monsters but sometimes it gets a little boring seeing another alien/orc/strange-human-thing...I really enjoy seeing toon-like or more stylized things like this (I know I would enjoy sculpting such things if I had the ability hahah).

I did check out some Blender tutorials on Youtube before, but I only got through the basic stages of learning the interface and such...I don't think I got as far as sculpting anything hahah. I'll have a look at the blendercookie ones and see if they shed some better light!

Wow, this looks great! I love the lighting and the shadows. Looks this could be an in-game model if they made a Conker game for ps4. :)

How easy is it for someone to pick up on who has had no previous experience in computer modeling? I started messing around in Blender but then fell out of it when something important in my life came up.

Well it's like most things, the task itself isn't necessarily difficult, but learning how/why to do certain things is what takes the time. I didn't actually model this in Blender (although the technique would have been the same, and wouldn't have been any more difficult), I made it in Silo 2.0, I just used Blender to rig, pose and render her. There are plenty of videos on Youtube on how to model characters. Look up "Box modelling" on google or youtube and you should find a decent amount of resources.

Yeah, took a lot longer to get around to rigging it than I expected. I think I was put off by having to learn Blender, but it's actually been a pleasant experience

What are your plans for it? Maybe some animations, or how about importing as a Second Life avatar?

to do 3d modeling interest me a lot, but I'm totally at lost how it's possible to sculpt thing from an empty screen of Blender and the basic shape ^^;

This model was created using a technique called 'box modelling', you can see an example of it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIyxMv…

wow ! thanks a lot

It's a great method, like using clay :)

and it helps to visualize how to build with Blender.

it is very helpful to start.
