Hard Square Brush by BenHickling Hard Square Brush by BenHickling
I couldn't ever find a brush like this myself, despite seeing people use them plenty of times. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place? Who knows! In the end I just figured out how to make one myself, and it makes sense to share it just incase someone else is looking for something similar.

It won't necessarily be what you're after, and it does take some getting used to, but it's still pretty nice for painting with. Especially when you need hard edges. It works really well on rock I've found, or just for quick, rough painting in general.

As long as you've got a version of photoshop higher than 7, you should be okay.

Ah yeah, I forgot I was hosting it on CGHub, which unfortunately got shut down last week. I've re-uploaded it, so now you can get it here: www.cursesfoiled.co.uk/square_…

As soon as I started using it, I decided that I LOVED it, but for some reason, it always makes my photoshop crash... ): Do you have any idea why that may be?

I'm not sure to be honest :/ I remember using someone else's hair brush (not literally) and it would randomly cause my photoshop to crash too. Never did get to the bottom of it though. All I can suggest is perhaps remaking the brush yourself, the settings won't be hard to copy since it's a pretty basic brush and it will probably solve the problem as it's probably something to do with version differences.

Hmm. Okay, well, thanks anyways! You're right, it probably won't be too hard for me to make my own brush, so I'll try to do that.

I've never come across proper guides for painting, at least not for free. I learnt everything I know from studying other painters work, watching process videos on youtube and just jumping in to photoshop to try and figure how on earth they did it. I'll admit it took a couple of years to figure out the stuff I know now (which is still only a fraction of what there is to learn), but it was something I was genuinely interested in, so I enjoyed myself as I went along. Places like Conceptart.org and cghub.com have a lot of professionals on and that can be a good place to start learning from, just don't expect out-right tutorials, as a lot of things aren't quite as clean-cut as that.

I wish I could give a more definitive answer, but it's such a wide ranged subject that there's just no way to consolidate it all into one place. Obviously if you have any specific questions I'll be more than happy to try and answer them for you.

Theres square brushes built right into photoshop from the start, you just have to find them. (I stumbled on them by accident after i gave up looking for some online).

Heres a ss of where you can find them.
[link]

I dont know if you want to know this since you made a square brush, but theres other pre made brushes you can find in there as well.

Do you use it with a lower opacity or by changing colors?

Not quite sure what you mean? Those are two different things, unless you mean how do you blend with it?

I'm saying when YOU use it, do you the opacity variations of the brush or do you select each time a different color when doing the shading?

A lot of it is opacity/flow variation from the pen pressure, but changing the colour occasionally helps the image look more interesting too
