Recently I've been thinking about consistency and what it means when it comes to artwork. I remember reading about the "four C's of art", I can't remember the rest of them, but one of them was definitely consistency. At the time I thought that meant you had to draw the same thing all the time, or just stick to one style, but to me that sounded very limiting and possibly damaging to someones ability to improve. However, I think I finally understand why it's so important now - it's how people recognize your work. Now, this might sound really obvious (and it probably is) and in the back of my mind I'm pretty sure I knew this, but for some reason I didn't really pay much attention to it. Well, I think it's time that changed.

Have you looked through my gallery lately? If you didn't know me better, and I hadn't been on DA for as long as I have, you'd probably think I was an art thief or something! That is honestly what it looks like in some places (although there are periods where the art actually seems consistent, but then something suddenly veers off in another direction..).

I think recently, more than ever, my art has been really inconsistent. I kinda struggle with this, because I desperately want to try out new ideas, techniques, brushes, effects, styles etc etc, but I also don't want to alienate my existing audience. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying out new stuff, but I don't think everything I produce needs to be placed in my main galleries. I might make a separate blog or something just for these experiments so that I can still share them with anyone who's interested, but without damaging the consistency of my regular work.

All I want is for people to be able to recognise my work and have a general idea of what to expect next. Nobody follows an artist because they draw completely randomly, they follow them because they draw/paint in a way that's interesting to them, or regularly draw a subject matter that's relevant to them. If I look at any of the artists I follow, they all have a consistent style or theme that they draw regularly. I know what to expect from them, and I like that. If they started drawing random things in a random style, I would probably start to get bored and possibly stop following them. I can imagine the same could happen to some of my followers if I don't sort this problem out soon.

Now that I've identified the problem, I'm going to look through my gallery and move anything I deem inconsistent to my scraps.

If you'd like to read more on the subject, this article helped me understand the importance of it better: www.reddotblog.com/wordpress/i…
Been off the wagon for a bit due to an operation in the summer last year, and then the recovery period after that, so now I'm looking for work again.

It's probably a bit of a long shot (who knows!), but does anyone have leads on any UK based artist roles? Don't really mind where, just needs to be based in the UK somewhere :)

Thanks for your help, and happy new year!

Thank you!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes, everyone! I was surprised I got so many, I think I got like... 5 last year? Okay, that might be a slight understatement, but there were a lot more this year, so thank you! Sorry I haven't posted anything lately, life has been a bit crazy this past month and getting a cold/flu thing didn't really help with the productivity. I think I also have a slight art block right now, but I'm not too worried 'cus those things always shift eventually.

I think that's all... yup.

Cheers guys!

blah blah

Journal Entry: Mon Nov 21, 2011, 7:54 AM
Sorry, couldn't think of a worthwhile title. Just need to rant a little bit since that usually helps with this kind of thing.

What am I ranting about? Well, I'm in a bit of a creative slump at the moment. I'm still able to produce things, as you've seen lately, but most of it doesn't feel very fulfilling to me (and that's pretty important for an artist, I think). Part of it is that I haven't painted anything properly in over a month and when I say properly, I mean something that's actually challenged me and caused me to learn something new. That's usually my main drive; trying out a new technique, or attempting to figure out how another artist achieved something. Thing is, I just haven't felt like painting anything lately, hence all the sketches and flat coloured stuff (or iphone stuff) I've been doing. Normally this kind of thing blows over after a week, but it's gone on longer that and now it's starting to bug me.

Another thing that's irritating me (and is probably just in my head), is that I worry that people are going to be alienated by all the different stuff I draw and the different methods I use to do it. I'm not sure why I think that, but I do, and I can't seem to shake it. What I'd really like to be able to do is just draw/paint whatever the hell I want and post it without even thinking if anyone is going to be bothered about it, because really it's not my problem. In fact, one of my biggest issues with this kind of thing is that there are a number of professional people watching me who's work I've looked up to in the past, and now that they're following my work, I feel that only certain things are okay to post, lest I put them off my stuff. What's up with that?

It's all very silly, I know that, but that doesn't stop it having a considerable effect on how I feel sometimes. Now I just need to figure out a way to stop it!

TL;DR - I worry too much about what others might think of me

Okay, rant over!

Sketch Binge + 4,000 watchers

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 6, 2011, 6:26 AM
Update: Thanks for the ideas guys! I started drawing some of them last night, but I got distracted so I didn't get nearly as many done as I would have liked. I'll carry on tonight and hopefully have it posted up by the end of the evening.

In other news, I recently hit 4,000 watchers! I know some people probably have billions, but I still think 4,000 is pretty neat, so thanks guys! :)

Sonic Generations demo

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 23, 2011, 4:03 AM
...is now available on PSN and Xbox live, although you'll need a gold membership for the xbox version as microsoft like making new demos exclusive to gold members for the first week. Ughh. Anyways, it's a demo featuring just the classic sonic Green Hill level, and it's only going to be playable for 20 days, which is a bit weird, but I can't complain. I'd give my impressions on it, but I'm stuck at work right now so I can only pretend to know how awesome it is.

GO GET IT!

Birthday

Journal Entry: Fri May 20, 2011, 10:04 AM
Well it's my birthday again (it keeps happening?) and therefore I have to make a journal about it. It's true. It's written on my birth certificate that I must fulfill this basic task or face a hefty fine of 30 seconds in prison, and everyone knows how slow times goes when you're somewhere you don't want to be!

I was surprised to find that Google hadn't created a personalized birthday logo for me using letters made from cleverly placed alpacas. I'll let them off this time as I've only been alive 27 years and I've got a feeling you have to be over 153 for Google to recognize you even exist (or existed), still, it would have been a nice surprise.

I also got given a few bits of paper with the queens face on it, I think it might be her way of saying happy birthday. Thank you Queen Elizabeth 2.0!

And thank YOU for all the birthday messages!

Sonic Generations [UPDATE]

Journal Entry: Thu Apr 21, 2011, 5:30 AM
Here's a new video featuring an almost complete playthrough of both classic and modern green hill zones. It's basically the same footage as in the interview video I posted previosly, but there's a bit more footage in this one, plus you can hear the music clearly now. I have to say, the more I see the more excited I'm becoming. I know that's been a bad idea in the past, but I don't care. MY BODY IS READY. I'm really curious to see what the zone lineup is going to be like, I can only imagine how cool Chemical Plant Zone would look in this game, or even Hydro City Zone. What levels would you like to see make a return?

Check out the video here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wuj-6T…

Official trailer - www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV1Osn…

I have to admit, it looks pretty damn good. If what they say is true about avoiding the physics problems of Sonic 4 (no Dimps working on it this time), then I think we might have a winner!

Who knows if it will be good, if it's as good as Sonic Colours then I will be happy. At the very least the trailer shows classic Green Hill elements and even Sonic's original design is in there. From what I've heard, they're supposedly taking the best 2D and 3D levels from the previous games and re-imagining them. I've no idea how solid that info is, but it fits in well with what the trailer shows. No idea how they'd make that work as a coherent game or story, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Thundercats 2011 HD trailer

I think it looks pretty good. Might actually live up to the action in the original show's title sequence (which then rarely occurred in the actual show ;)). I like the designs quite a bit, but then I wasn't overly attached to the originals I guess. Still, it feels like decent cartoons are finally making a come back, and that certainly can't be a bad thing!

[Updated] Painting process steps

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 12, 2010, 9:15 AM
Here's the Smurfette painting process steps I mentioned the other day:

cursesfoiled.co.uk/smurfette_p…

It's a pretty large image, 992 x 13140 (1.5mb) but hopefully it gives an idea of how things progress when I work on something like this. It doesn't really explain my process, so that'll have to be shown in video form at some point.

Enjoy, and feel free to ask any questions that come to mind :)

Possible gallery cleaning

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 10, 2010, 2:45 AM
If there's stuff in my gallery that you like, it might be a good idea to save it as I'm considering doing a little tidying up soon.

There's a lot of stuff in my gallery that I feel doesn't really belong there any more, and it's causing it to look very inconsistent. It's annoying!

After I've done that, I'm going to make a concious effort to actually upload regularly and try and bring this place back to life. It's become terribly neglected over the years and I want to change that as soon as possible.

It will require me to actually work on new stuff more regularly, but that's hardly a bad thing, right?

General Updatingness

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 8, 2010, 7:07 AM
My apologies for not having uploaded anything in a while, I've been pretty busy with colouring some work for :iconalohalilo:'s next sketchbook due to be sold at Comic-Con this year (if everything goes to plan!). In fact I had the pleasure of meeting up with him again this past Friday as he was visiting Bath to do a recording session with Nicolas Cage for the upcoming Dreamworks film, The Croods. It was fun to see him and Kirk De Micco (his co-director on the film) throwing ideas around for various scenes in the film. Later we had pizza and Pimms, and I don't care if people think Pimms is a ladies drink, it tasted awesome and was perfect on a hot summer evening! So there!

Hopefully I'll be able to post some of the work I've coloured soon, probably after the books have gone on sale.

In other news, I was thinking of doing a "T-shirt a day" kinda thing where I basically come up with a new t-shirt design daily and see how long I can keep it up for. I'd probably set up a blog for it where all the designs would get posted, and then the more interesting ones could get posted here, too. I honestly don't know how difficult it would be, but I figure it could be good fun, and would be pretty interesting for anyone watching the progress. I'll have to think on it a bit more, but it's definitely an idea that's stuck in my head!

Sonic 4

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 4, 2010, 2:25 AM

Here's my thoughts on it:

Pros

:bulletblue: True 2D gameplay
:bulletblue: Classic designs for environments and scenery
:bulletblue: Badniks, Monitors(supposedly) and end of level spinning sign post
:bulletblue: Decent retro-style music, original sound effects
:bulletblue: Acts and Zones are back

Cons

:bulletred: Sonic's running animation looks very clunky in 3D
:bulletred: Sonic & Dr.Robotnik's newer designs don't mesh well with the more classic stylings of the game (personal preference)
:bulletred: Added homing attack could lead to bad level design (i.e enemies forming a 'bridge' over a large gap)

An interesting thing to note is that there is a locked character slot on the Sonic 4 website. I can't imagine it would be Tails or Knuckles since it'd seem strange having one without the other, especially since this game is supposed to take place after Sonic & Knuckles. I don't think it'd be Robotnik, since we already know he's in the game. I'd like to think there's a possibility of it being the classic design that Sonic used to have. Who knows, I guess we'll just have to wait and see!
